Rauvolfia vomitoria is a shrub from the family Apocynacea, for centuries used by indigenous people of West Africa for healing purposes. This plant shows analgesic, antipyretic and antineoplastic properties. It is also often used in case of gastrointestinal discomfort and psychotic disorders.
Researchers have identified a number of pharmacologically active alkaloids in the roots, leaves and stems of Rauvolfia vomitoria. Extracts available in supplementation are most often standardized for the content of α-yohimbine (rauwolscine). This alkaloid is closely related to the well-known yohimbine. It has a strong slimming effect and prevents the accumulation of adipose tissue. Another alkaloid isolated from the plant – reserpine – has been used for a long time in traditional medicine. It was part of many popular antipsychotics, which over time were replaced by more advanced preparations.
Rauvolfia vomitoria extracts can be found mainly in supplements aimed at weight reduction. They rarely occur in the form of mono-preparations – instead, they are combined with other substances.
