Potassium nitrate is a chemical compoundused in supplementation, formed by combining nitrates with potassium. Potassium nitrate, referred to as the ordinary saltpetre, associated with plant fertilisation and meat preservation, is a salt of potassium and nitric acid. The compound comprising 61% nitrates and 39% potassium is used in sports supplementation. It is marketed as an agent enhancing physical performance, increasing muscle strength and promoting vasodilation. It is often sold under the proprietary name KNOC™ and MaxNOx™.
Nitrates have a major role in this chemical union. These are non-organic compounds which convert in the body to nitrites and consequently nitric oxide. Nitric oxide is a key regulator of vascular tone. It causes the relaxation of the vascular smooth muscles and widening of blood vessel lumen, consequently boosting blood flow. Potassium bound to nitrates is an essential mineral for a healthy heart and muscles. It is also responsible for water-electrolyte and acid-base balance in the body.
Potassium nitrate can be used alone, but it is most frequently an ingredient of so-called nitric oxide boosters and pre-workout supplements.
