It has been shown to act as an antioxidant and is thus applied percutaneously in cosmetology. It is believed to prevent ageing processes. When it is administered orally, it is used as a medicine in the treatment of neurological disorders.
Idebenone has a therapeutic effect on a quite wide range of diseases. It may reduce symptoms of motor neuron diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, impaired cognitive functions or Duchenne muscular dystrophy. However, it is not sufficiently effective at treating these diseases. Because of that, it is recommended as the main form of treatment only for optic neuropathy.
In supplementation, idebenone is used mainly due to its nootropic properties. It enhances cognitive abilities and promotes memory, thereby facilitating learning. In addition, idebenone may enhance the efficiency of mitochondrial function, consequently optimising the body’s energy metabolism.
